This project involved remodeling a resort hotel of 380 rooms. Asbestos was found in the ceiling texture and sheetrock joint compound. Naturally the hotel didn't want to close down entirely to do this renovation. This would have been a serious loss of revenue. The renovation was completed in sections, minimizing the number of rooms out of commission at any given time. This meant guests would be in the hotel while we were conducting the abatement. Our two primary goals were to work within the hotel's schedule and not to cause any undue alarm or concern to the guests.
We planned our abatement based on occupancy and the vacation season. More rooms were available for renovation out of season so we increased the size of our work force in the winter and took more rooms out of service. In the spring and summer we curtailed our operations to accommodate the hotels schedule. During one portion no more than 36 rooms were out of service at any given time, and at the end of the season the hotel turned over 121 rooms. Again we adjusted to meet the hotels needs rather than the other way around.
Few people realize how much asbestos is still out there. Again, as long as it is in good condition, it isn't causing any problems. The general public hears the word asbestos and they automatically associate it with cancer. The last thing the hotel wants is for guests in the hotel worrying about asbestos in their rooms. Our workers are discreet, no protective gear is worn or displayed outside the containment. All containments are built for privacy. If necessary, we will build an additional wall to hide the required asbestos warning signs. Access to the containments is restricted. There is always a supervisor on site to deter inquisitive guest. If guests inquired about the containments, they were told they were there to suppress noise and dust during the construction. Very few people had any idea an asbestos abatement was going on.
